District Position Description
Position Title: Maintenance Assistant
Department: Maintenance
Reports to: Maintenance Director
Position Open Until Filled.

Qualifications: Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver’s License. Demonstrates success in performing tasks of the sort listed below. Such additional qualifications as the Superintendent and Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Assists maintenance director in assessing school properties on a regular basis for needed repairs and maintenance;
- Works with the maintenance director and building principals regarding the establishment of regular preventive maintenance programs;
- Deals with emergency repair problems with efficiency and in a timely manner, as set by the maintenance director;
- Conducts preventative maintenance for facility systems;
- Handles minor repairs such as replacing work or deficient wiring, switches, faucets, plumbing fixtures, and the like, and repairing fencing, asphalt, concrete, ceiling, etc.;
- Helps maintain the grounds at all school properties and related facilities (this includes cutting, trimming, edging, and cleaning lawns);
- Requests supplies and equipment as needed;
- Coordinates with maintenance director and building principals during winter months to paint and perform other maintenance activities;
- Assists maintenance director as needed;
- Participates in required training (conferences, meetings, and webinars) as assigned;
- Performs such other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibility: None
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to vendors and personnel.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to interpret and apply common sense understanding in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as a tool box. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 pounds. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, scaffolds, and air compressors. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Operate hand and power tools/equipment inclusive of, but not limited to: blowers, light construction equipment, bucket truck, out-front mower, farm tractors, hand tools, buffers, pick-up truck, dingo, power tools and chain saws. Routine travel and/or occasional overnight travel may be required.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays and non-household dust. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. Frequently the employee will work alone and occasionally will work irregular or extended hours. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally will work in a loud area. Frequent exposure of up to 80% of work time in dirt, dust, extreme temperature, and noxious fumes and odors. Must wear safety gear when appropriate, and follow safety training and instructions provided by the supervisor. Must maintain all personal protective equipment required for the job.
Terms of Employment: 12 months. Salary to be established by the Superintendent and approved by the Board.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the maintenance director and assistant superintendent in accordance to performance in meeting all tasks assigned by the job description.
